There seems to be a bumper crop of bunnies in the Badger state. That’s good for the rabbits but not so much so from a human perspective. “Probably the biggest problem with rabbits and people is the fact that rabbits certainly like some of the things you’re planting in your garden,” says David Drake, a wildlife ecologist at the University of Wisconsin.
“Rabbit populations can fluctuate naturally with environmental conditions,” Drake says. “It seems like the population is up this year relative to the last couple of years, and that’s due to good habitat,” including enough to eat.
“It seems like there are a lot of rabbits, based on the number of calls and e-mails I’ve gotten,” says Drake, adding that he’s observed what appears to a larger than usual number of young rabbits this year.
