Ethanol produced from corn seems to be the hot alternative fuel for many. But not for everyone.

State senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) believes in alternative energy. She says she just doesn't want to wreak havoc on the world's food supply to do it.

Lazich is afraid that's what's happening with the rush to get corn to an ethanol plant. She points to recent published evidence that claims the corn tortilla, a Mexican staple, is already threatened by higher prices and short supplies.

So how does the US wean itself off foreign oil? Lazich says more research can be done to cultivate solar and wind power. Or using the leftover cooking oils from restaurants.

Lazich says she voted against an ethanol mandate during the last legislative session because she doesn't believe the public demand for it is there just yet.
