A political observer says the campaign for state attorney general is the most negative ever.

Jay Heck with Common Cause in Wisconsin says the 2000 race for A.G. between Democrat Peg Lautenschlager and Republican Vince Biskupic, had relatively little mudslinging, a far cry from this year. “My guess is that it (the negative tone) is turning people off,” said Heck. There have been plenty of shots exchanged between Lautenschlager and her Democratic primary challenger, Kathleen Falk, and a now infamous radio exchange between Republicans J.B. Hollen and Paul Bucher, in which Van Hollen said “you suck” to Bucher during a commercial break.

With two weeks until the primary election, Heck says he's hopeful there'll be some elevation of the discourse — so voters can actually find out where the candidates stand on the issues.
