The Whistling Straits golf course near Sheboygan becomes the center of the golfing world this week, as the PGA Championship comes to Wisconsin.

It’s the second time in six years the PGA has brought a major event to the state, and Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble says it could bring some major economic benefits along with it.

Trumble estimates the tournament could have an $80 million impact on the state, with at least half of that coming from out of state visitors who come to Wisconsin for the tournament. She says hotels around the site, and even some far away, have solid reservations from golfing fans coming to watch.

The championship opens today, but tournament play doesn’t get underway until Thursday.
