Lawmakers could be back at the Capitol before the end of the year.

Members of the state Assembly have been told to keep their calendars open on December 16 for a possible special session of the Legislature. If they come back, Governor Jim Doyle is hopeful they’ll take care of some unfinished business.

One of the issues he wants to see action on is reforming Milwaukee Public Schools, with a bill allowing the mayor to take over the system. The proposal has been held up due to opposition from Milwaukee-area lawmakers. They’ve introduced competing proposals that give the mayor some oversight, but allow the board to maintain control.

The Governor says those proposals fall short of the level of reform he wants to see take place.

Doyle also wants lawmakers to take action on OWI reforms, which include making the 4th offense a felony in Wisconsin. Lawmakers adjourned earlier this fall without an agreement on how to pay for proposed reforms.
