dhsNearly seven percent fewer abortions were performed in Wisconsin last year. That continues a five-year decline, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Department of Health Services. The annual DHS report on induced abortions found the number fell from 6,927 in 2012 to 6,462 last year. The figure has declined every year since 2009, when there were 8,542 abortions performed.

The numbers from DHS were greeted as “fantastic news” by Wisconsin Right to Life Executive Director Heather Weininger, who said her group was “extremely grateful for each and every woman who gives life to her child, and each unborn child saved from the violence of abortion.”

Since 1987, state law has required medical facilities to report selected information on patients who received elective abortions.
