A federal consumer web site on nursing homes has almost nothing about the 56 deaths that resulted in citations against Wisconsin homes since 2005, according the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Tom Frazier, Executive Director of the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups , says those interested in a nursing home must do their "homework" by checking as many sources as possible.
The senior citizens' advocate suggests checking with the state health department keeps public records of citations and fines issued against homes.
Frazier also says there is a State Board on Aging and Long Term Care ombudsmen program which monitors nursing home quality. Ombusdmen are resident advocates who mediate complaints on behalf of consumers.
The state is considering putting nursing home inspection records online.
