A group says lawmakers are going down the wrong road by allowing Illegal immigrants a chance at drivers' cards. Immigration rights advocates claim undocumented persons with false identities are less likely to report crimes to police which results in greater danger for everyone.

But Susan Tully, National Field Director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform ( FAIR ),disagrees citing “cultural reasons” for the apprehension to speak to police. She says the majority of immigrants referred to in this case are from Latin American countries that have a history of corruption and unscrupulous action by law enforcement.

The Viroqua-based Tully is outraged that the legislature's budget writing panel is clearing the way for the drivers' cards, which could be obtained without a social security number. She says lawmakers need start doing what they were elected to do, “upholding and supporting the rule of law.”

The driver's card provision was not in the Governor's budget plan submitted to the Joint Finance Committee. The panel's Democrats included it into the JFC's final budget which now goes to the full legislature.
