A Janesville school teacher accused of showing up to work drunk has resigned. The Janesville Board of Education on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Washington Elementary School teacher Maria Caya, who had been with the district for 14 years.

The 50-year-old Caya was one of nine chaperones supervising a fourth grade trip to a bowling alley in June, when she became ill and had to be taken to a hospital. While being treated, it was discovered her blood alcohol level was 0.27, more than three times the legal limit of intoxication for drunk drivers.

Caya was never criminally charged in the incident, after police said there was no indication the children had been put at risk. A school district investigation of the incident was ongoing at the time of her resignation.
