Speed and alcohol were not factors in an Altoona crash which killed one person and injured two others Wednesday evening. According to the Altoona Police Department, a car driven by 77 year-old Roger J. Zwart, of Longville, Minnesota, was southbound on McCann Drive and entered US 12 to make a left hand turn. While attempting to cross traffic, the car was struck in the driver’s side door by a pickup driven by 37 year-old Alan R Ross, 37, of Fall Creek. The truck was pulling a large trailer carrying two round hay bales.
It appears the crash was due to the car failing to yield to the oncoming pickup truck. All occupants in both vehicles were wearing seat belts.
Zwart died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash. Zwart’s passengers, 77-year old Donna Zwart and Eau Claire resident Monna Clemens, 67, were transported to local hospitals with injuries. Ross and his two passengers were not injured in the crash.
