A state lawmaker proposes three constitutional amendments affecting the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Representative Sheryl Albers questions whether membership in the state bar should be mandatory for Wisconsin attorneys; one amendment would eliminate that. A second proposed constitutional amendment would prohibit the assessment of fees on Wisconsin attorneys to provide legal services to the indigent, which the Supreme Court first imposed two years ago. A third amendment from the Reedsberg Republican would require all Supreme Court conferences to be open. The proposed constitutional amendments would have to pass two consecutive sessions of the legislature, and a statewide referendum in order to go into effect.
