Blaze orange returns to woodlands and fields in Wisconsin this morning, with the start of the October gun deer season.

Keith Warnke of the DNR says it's just for deer without antlers, and hunters can kill as many as they have tags for. Still, Warnke says the average for this particular season is usually less than one per hunter out in the woods.

It's estimated the statewide deer population is approaching 1.7 million.

The season ends on Sunday.

WIBA's John Colbert contributed this report.
