The sweltering heat that’s settled across Wisconsin is not comfortable for anyone — including pets and livestock. State Veterinarian Bob Ehlenfeldt explains what to watch out for in livestock or pets that are overheating. “Panting, some of them will be down, labored respiration, failure to move or get up,” he said. Staying out of the heat is recommended, but for farm animals Dr. Ehlenfeldt says water and fans are key. “Fans, a breeze, shade, plenty of fresh cold water available, misters in dairy barns,” he explained, adding that many animals will not be eating as much in the hot temps. Also, unless you really have to, don’t transport animals in the heat.
