Incumbent Congressman Dave Obey is re-elected to another term in the 7th Congressional District.
The Wausau Democrat defeated Republican challenger Dan Mielke on Tuesday by more than 50,000 votes. Obey says he appreciates all of the support the residents of his district have given him.
He says the new Congress and President need to make the economy the first priority. Obey believes that should include passing a new economic stimulus package.
Mielke – a sustainable farmer from Rudolph – had sharply disagreed with Obey on health care, taxes and spending and the recent Wall Street financial rescue plan.
He also criticized Obey for remaining in the position for so long. Obey was first elected to the House in 1969.
He now returns to a chamber where Democrats added to their majority control.
