The state Court of Appeals on Thursday issued a ruling against boys competing in girls' sports in Wisconsin public schools. The court ruled against Keith Bukowski, a student at Stevens Point Area High School. Bukowski sued the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association over a rule that prevented him from trying out for the girls' gymnastics team. He claimed there was a violation of his constitutional rights, pupil discrimination, and under provisions of the federal Title IX Act.

WIAA Executive Director Doug Chickering says allowing Bukowski on the team could have set a precedent that might hurt girls' sports around the state. He says allowing boys to participate on girls team could reduce the opportunities for girls to compete.

The decision upholds a ruling that was made in Portage County Circuit Court.
