An investigation into a police officer-involved shooting in Appleton last week has determined the man wounded by officers was trying to commit suicide by cop, and that police were justified in opening fire on the suspect.
Appleton Police Captain Todd Thomas says the 22-year-old man used a file to remove the orange tip from a pistol-style Airsoft gun on the night of April 10. He then flashed the weapon at a gas station clerk after shoplifting from the store. When officers located the man, he pulled the weapon and refused to put it down, despite repeated warnings from police. Officers then fired eight shots, four of which hit the man.
Based on the investigation, Outagamie County District Attorney Carrie Schneider says she’s clearing the officers of any wrongdoing.
During a press conference on Thursday, police would not comment on the condition of the suspect or if he’s still hospitalized.
