A mother and her young daughter are dead, and a man is in custody in Texas, in connection with a double homicide Wednesday in New Richmond. It’s the first homicide case in the western Wisconsin city in 39 years.

The bodies of 30 year old Courtney L. Bradford and her 10 year old daughter Jasmine Bradford were found in two different locations in their home following a house fire on Wednesday afternoon. New Richmond Police Chief Mark Samelstad said a man he identified as Courtney Bradford’s ex-boyfriend, 37-year-old Cristian Daniel Nunez-Ortega, was arrested Thursday by police in El Paso, Texas.

Samelstad said Nunez-Ortega was arrested while using one of Courtney Bradford’s credit cards. Nunez-Ortega is being held on charges of car theft and financial fraud. Samelstad said investigators believe Nunez-Ortega stole a car in Iowa. His own vehicle was found abandoned in that state.
