As you buy fireworks for the holiday weekend, make sure they're legal in your community.

On Monday, Milwaukee officials announced it's against the law to use anything other than caps. Even sparklers, firecrackers, smoke bombs and bottle rockets are illegal in the state's largest city.

"It is complicated because fireworks regulations are mostly local, so it's hard to say. Some communities, for example Milwaukee and Madison, don't allow any fireworks to be sold. Others do."

Glen Loyd with the state Department of Consumer Protection says before you buy, make sure you check fireworks rules and regulations in your area, because they vary statewide. Loyd says some of those noise-makers are banned across the state.

"But you know firecrackers and things that jump up and … like that … are illegal across the state."

In Milwaukee, violators will be fined from $500 to $1,000, or spend 40 days in jail. Officials say it's hard to tell the different between fireworks and gun shots; and occasionally loose explosives can inadvertently start fires on roofs and elsewhere.
