Republicans plan to try a new approach on the stalled state budget. Insisting that it's not "a political tactic," Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch says his GOP caucus will bring a "Property Taxpayer Protection Act" to the floor next Tuesday. Huebsch calls it "a package that will protect taxpayers, break a great deal of this impasse that we have to try to get any movement going, and solve well over half this budget." The package would set the funding level for K-12 education for the next two years, along with state aid to local units of government. Despite Huebsch's insistence that this is not a political tactic, Governor Jim Doyle has already stated he'll reject any effort to split the budget into various components. And Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Judy Robson , brands the GOP effort a "political stunt" and "exercise in futility."
