The National Guard is sending engineers Tuesday to the mud pit that was once Lake Delton to try and bring the water back. The 245 acre, rain-swollen lake is now empty after it cut its own channel around a dam and emptied into the Wisconsin River.

Water in the man-made lake rose until it was too much for an embankment along Sauk County Highway A. Part of the highway washed away as the water drained. Three homes floated downstream and disappeared in the water, and the foundations of two other homes were destroyed.

Tina Pekar moved with her husband from suburban Milwaukee to Lake Delton three years ago. Their “dream home” is now gone.

“Its surreal we don't even believe it yet you it just doesn't feel real.”

No one was hurt because the area was evacuated early Monday morning when the lake left its banks.
