Cost is a big issue in construction of a proposed power line across Dane County.

If approved, a high voltage transmission line proposed by American Transmission Company could be forced to be placed underground in areas near Madison. ATC's Sarah Justus says that could up the price of the project considerably, adding nearly $300 million to the price tag.

A study conducted by the Public Service Commission says the project would cost more than $580 million if the line is built near Madison's beltline highway.

A decision on the line from Rockdale to Middleton is expected next summer.
