An audit of state government spending on information technology reveals some bad news for taxpayers. The state spends millions every year on information technology projects, but state auditor Janice Mueller told a legislative committee that an audit of that spending reveals a couple of big problems. "First and foremost is inadequate planning and inadequate oversight," Mueller told members of the Assembly Speaker's Task Force on Information Technology . Mueller said timelines and cost estimates for various projects, which might run for years, need to be changed from time to time. "Unfortunately, what happened with some of the projects in our case study, is that it wasn't done quickly enough," she noted. Mueller said there were "a very large number" of IT system failures, even during the course of the year long audit conducted by her agency, and that many of those could have been avoided with better oversight. Mueller does expect the situation to improve, since the audit has revealed the problems.
