The third time’s a charm for former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin who will be getting his old job back. He narrowly defeated incumbent Dave Cieslewicz with 51-percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election. Soglin was mayor of the capital city during periods in the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s.  At his victory party, Soglin told supporters, “We are just beginning.”

Cieslewicz said during his concession speech, “Our city faces challenges like we’ve never had before…we up to these challenges.”

Incumbents in other parts of the state fared better. Racine Mayor John Dickert is finishing out the rest of the term in office after beating Alderman Eric Marcus. Dickert took over for then-Mayor Gary Becker who was convicted two years ago for attempted child enticement and sexual assault.

Green Bay’s Mayor Jim Schmitt will hold on to his job after gaining 60-percent of the vote over challenger Patrick Evans.
