Even opponents of the Governor's proposed $1.25 a pack increase for cigarettes believe something will pass the legislature.

State Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) predicts lawmakers will approve at least a 75 cents a pack increase in the state budget. Grothman doesn't support the full increase that the Governor is proposing, but thinks a lesser amount could get by. He says most people don't smoke and don't like smokers, so there's less hesitation to levy a tax on cigarettes.
