The Wisconsin men’s hockey team was shutout on its home ice on Friday night, falling 2-0 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in Big Ten play.
The Badgers looked a bit rusty after a three week layoff. Neither team scored in the first two periods before the Buckeyes finally broke through at 8:53 of the third period when David Gust beat Wisconsin freshman goaltender Matt Jurusik on the glove side.
The Buckeyes added the insurance goal with a three-on-one break with almost four minutes left with Tyler Lundey finding the back of the net.
Wisconsin (4-8-5, 1-3-1-0 Big Ten) outshot the Buckeyes. Game two of the series is tonight at the Kohl Center.
Badger women win again
Thanks to a four-goal first period, the second-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team opened the 2016 portion of their schedule with a 5-1 victory over Minnesota-Duluth at LaBahn Arena on Friday night.
Wisconsin (19-1-1, 13-1-1-1 WCHA) picked up its 15th consecutive home win, matching the program’s longest home winning streak.
The Badgers outshot the Bulldogs 56-18, marking the sixth time this season the Badgers have taken 50 or more shots in a game.
Sarah Nurse scored a pair of goals for the Badgers, who close out the series on Sunday afternoon in Madison.
