The second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers got a first period goal from junior defenseman Jenny Ryan held up in Friday’s 1-0 win over 6th-ranked Bemidji State at the Sanford Center in Bemidji.
Junior goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped all 28 shots she faced to earn her 11th shutout of the season, which leads the NCAA. She leads the country in goals-against average (0.67) and save percentage (.962), while her 19 wins are tied for the most in the country.
The Badgers improved to 21-1-1 overall. The two teams will close out the 2-game series this afternoon.
Badger men fall in OT
The Wisconsin men’s hockey team put together two separate third period comebacks, forcing overtime. But the Penn State Nittany Lions scored just 44 seconds into the overtime session, pulling out a 4-3 win over the Badgers.
The Badgers (4-9-6, 1-4-2-1 Big Ten) trailed the Nittany Lions (14-4-3, 4-1-0-0 Big Ten) 2-1 after surrendering a pair of second period goals. But Luke Kunin scored early in the third to tie the game for the Badgers. After Penn State took another lead, Jake Linhart scored his second goal of the game with less than four minutes left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
Freshman goaltender matt Jurusik recorded 54 saves on 58 shots, becoming the first UW goaltender since Bernd Bruckler in 2002 to record 50 or more saves in a game.
The loss marked the first overtime defeat for Wisconsin since March 14, 2014. The Badgers were undefeated in their previous 12 overtime games (1-0-11).
The Badgers will try to earn a split in the 2-game series. The puck drops at 5 p.m. today on ESPNU.
