The 12th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team got a third-period goal from
defenseman Jake McCabe to pull out a 2-1 win over the top ranked Minnesota Gophers at the Kohl Center on Thursday night. The win ends the Gophers 14-game unbeaten streak (10-0-4).
The Badgers (15-8-2, 6-4-1 Big Ten) scored first as defenseman Frankie Simonelli converted on the power play with 4:33 left in the first period. It was Simonelli’s sixth goal of the season.
The Gophers (19-3-5, 8-1-2) evened the score when Taylor Cammarata lit the lamp at the 17:20 mark.
Both teams went scoreless in the second period and McCabe tallied the game winner with 6:13 left in the third. Jedd Soleway set up McCabe, who scored his 7th of the season.
Joel Rumpel finished with 31 saves as Wisconsin handed the Gophers their first loss since Nov. 24 against Minnesota-Duluth.
