A Dane County court commissioner has doubled the bail for a former sheriff’s deputy accused of killing his wife and sister-in-law.

During a court appearance Thursday morning, Bail for 39-year-old Andrew Steele was raised from $1 million to $2 million, after prosecutors revealed new evidence showing that Steele planned the killings of his wife Ashley and her sister, Kacee Tollefsbol. Investigators say Steele left a note on his phone detailing the plan, which he had worked on days in advance.

Steele had been seeking a reduction in his bond and for an order to be lifted that currently blocks him from having contact with his children. Steele retired from the Dane County Sheriff’s Department in June, after he was diagnosed with ALS. His attorney has argued that he should be given a chance to speak with them.
