Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is heading to the Middle East.

This will be the Madison Democrat’s first trip to Afghanistan to get a firsthand look at the military and political situation in that region. “This is a fact-finding trip, which will provide me with opportunities to visit with the troops, including Wisconsin troops.”

Baldwin can’t give exact details, but says she’ll be leaving “in the coming days,” with questions aplenty. In planning for this trip, Baldwin says she spoke to some of her constituents who recently served overseas and asked them about their concerns. Also, her desire for an exit strategy has conjured up a few questions. “I’ve been outspoken in my belief that it is time for us to redeploy from Afghanistan.” So, she says, she’s got a few questions for the commanding generals.

Baldwin is the only female in the six member bipartisan Congressional delegation soon to depart for that war zone. She hopes to hear about how the woman of Afghanistan have been impacted during the war. Due to security reasons, Baldwin can’t say how much time will be spent there, or when she’ll return home. With 66 fatalities, July is the deadliest month for U-S forces in Afghanistan.
