Just ten seconds into her five-minute speech at the Democratic National Convention, Wisconsin’s U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin mentions, by name, the so-called rock stars in the Republican Party from Wisconsin. “I know you’ve heard a lot about Wisconsin lately; you’ve heard about Paul Ryan who wants to end Medicare as we know it; you’ve heard about Scott Walker who took basic rights away from teachers, nurses, and public employees.”
Baldwin continues, as she blasts her opponent for Wisconsin’s open U.S. Senate seat, Tommy Thompson. “Our former governor who went to Washington, cashed in on his special interest connections, and never really came back. Well I’m here to tell you that they don’t speak for all of Wisconsin.”
Baldwin tells the crowd “I want you to hear about the Wisconsin I know,” where the state motto is “Forward.”
Baldwin touts her effort to lead the charge for the Buffet rule, which ensures that millionaires and billionaires don’t pay a lower tax rate than middle class families. And she says the president is standing with her on that effort.
Baldwin spoke earlier than originally scheduled, just after 5:30pm central time, but still on the same night that President Barack Obama officially accepted his party’s nomination.
