A year after being attacked outside of the State Fair, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett returns.

Barrett was injured last August outside of State Fair Park, while trying to intervene in a domestic dispute. The Democratic candidate for governor still wears a brace on his injured right hand, but says he didn’t hesitate when returning to the scene of the attack.

Barrett was hurt last August while leaving the Fair, when he tried to stop 21-year-old Anthony J. Peters from attacking a woman and child. Peters was sentenced last month to 12 years in prison.

During his visit on Sunday, which was part of a campaign stop, Barrett met with farmers participating in this year’s event. He says many expressed concerns about staying in business, especially the family farms operating in Wisconsin. To accomplish that, Barrett says he’s proposing steps to help small farms remain competitive such as maintaining tax credits for modernizing farm equipment and making WHEDA loans to farmers.

Barrett’s Republican opponents, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former Congressman Mark Neumann, also visited the State Fair over the weekend.
