It may not be smokers vs. non-smokers facing off on the statewide smoking ban but restaurants vs. bars.

There are rumblings at the capital already that in order to get a statewide smoking ban passed bars and taverns may have to be exempt.

Ed Lump, President of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association says his board approves of the statewide ban but with no exemptions. He says there needs to be an even playing field for the businesses involved.

If you define a bar as a place where alcohol makes up 50 per cent or more of your sales, Lump says you can still sell a lot of food. In fact, he feels many places look more like restaurants than bars even by that definition. And that would be competition for pure restaurants where people who like to smoke, couldn't.
