The focus in Major League Baseball now centers around the July 31st Major League trade deadline. The Brewers are trying to work out a deal with their top free agent, slugging outfielder Carlos Lee. Lee's contract expires at seasons end and he could command a deal that would pay him $60-million over 5-years. What the Brewers also have to consider is the number of young players currently on their roster that will be arbitration eligible in two years and will likely command a hefty price. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said there's a good chance if the Brewers are able to stay in the playoff chase, that they'll keep Lee around to help the team down the stretch. Melvin said they could resign the slugger after the trade deadline or even at the end of the season.
