The Green Bay Packers were negotiating with the agent for running back Cedric Benson throughout the weekend, but didn’t reach a deal until Sunday afternoon.
That means Benson won’t hit the practice field until today. Based on the CBA, he’ll have to practice today and tomorrow in shells, which means he likely won’t be ready to play Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field.
The deal is reportedly for 1-year and pays the veterans minimum $850,000 with no bonus.
The Packers made the move because of a number of injured running backs.
Benson rushed for 1,000 yards three straight times. He hasn’t missed a game because of injury since 2009.
