It’s now it’s time for Cyber Monday, when people make most of their online purchases for the holidays. Brock Bergey of the state’s consumer protection department says shopping online isn’t a bad thing, but people need to be careful. He says shoppers should only stick to stores that they know are legitimate.
Bergey says they should also double check the business’ contact information by comparing it to an internet browser they trust, as scammers can fabricate legitimate looking site.
JoEllen Wollangk of the Better Business Bureau says it’s also a good idea to keep your computer’s security settings up, to protect it from viruses that could be launched by questionable websites. She says there’s an easy way to tell if you are going to a disreputable site, hover the mouse over the URL to see if the link will actually connect to what is described.
Both recommend being careful when using websites like Craigslist. Do not give out personal banking or credit card information. Wollangk also says be cautious when carrying to much cash as meetings have been known to be set ups for a robbery.
