A major renewable energy plant is now on-line. We Energies’ Glacier Hills Wind Park, now the largest wind farm in Wisconsin, is now in service. There are 90 Vestas turbines, made in Colorado, sitting atop towers which were fabricated in Manitowoc, spread across 17,000 acres in the Columbia County Towns of Randolph and Scott. “The turbines have a capability of producing enough electricity to power 45,000 homes,” says Cathy Schulze, a spokesperson with the Milwaukee-based utility.
Schulze says the project helps move the utility closer to meeting an important goal. “The state does have a renewable energy standard which is requiring utilities across the state to generate ten percent of our retail energy sales from renewable sources by 2015, so this project is very important for putting us in line to complete that goal.” We Energies also operates the 88-turbine Blue Sky Green Field Wind Center in Fond du Lac County.
