A 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Wausau is in being held on a $1 million cash bond in the murder of a high school senior.

Raul Ponce-Rocha made his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon on one count of first-degree intentional homicide for beating and stabbing Breanna Schneller to death.

Police focused their attention on Ponce-Rocha after he misled detectives during an interview last week.

Assistant District Attorney Ken Heimerman said he wanted the bond to ensure that Ponce-Roche would remain in custody in Wausau and not be prematurely deported to Mexico by immigration.

A date for a preliminary hearing will be set at a later date
