Eight Wisconsin beaches, including one each in Racine and South Milwaukee, plus two in Kenosha, are targeted for water quality and other improvements with the help of a million dollars in grants from the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

During a press briefing on Racine’s lakefront, Susan Hedman, EPA Regional Administrator and Great Lakes National Program Manager, said this is part of the latest effort to make beaches safer by eliminating harmful bacteria & other sources of contamination. Hedman said there was no better place than Racine to announce this year’s grants than Racine because of all the efforts locally at improving beach and water quality.

Hedman said redesign of the beaches will lead to the improvements in water quality and their overall health. UW-Oshkosh is getting the EPA grant money for redesign of the eight Wisconsin beaches, the other four in Manitowoc, Marinette, Algoma and Washburn.
