The family of a man fatally shot by Madison police releases a statement. The official statement released Wednesday through the office of attorney Ben Crump from the family of Corey Ruiz comes two weeks after he died in an intersection on the city’s near East Side, and a day after police cleared an encampment there. Bystander video showed four Madison officers struggling to subdue the 38-year-old Ruiz, who police said used a knife to injure the officer who shot him. That shooting remains under investigation. Their statement says the Ruiz family did not organize or authorize the encampment and were never asked and never agreed to a statement released in their name. “We ask everyone at that corner and everyone wearing a badge to keep this peaceful,” it says. “No one else should be hurt in Corey’s name.” The family has authorized a GoFundMe and asks that any campaign raising money for protest or advocacy work should say so plainly and should not tell donors the money is going to the Ruiz family.
