The Milwaukee Brewers used a solid starting pitching performance and a timely pinch-hit to pick up a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Brewers also avoided the sweep after dropping the first two games of the series.

The day didn’t start out to well for Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo.  He surrendered a solo home run to Arizona’s Kelly Johnson, the first batter of the game.  From then on, Gallardo was lights out giving up just the 1-run on 4-hits in 7-innings to improve his record to 10-5 on the year.  Manager Ron Roenicke on Gallardo’s performance…

Casey McGehee connected for a 3-run pinch-hit homer in the 7th to provide the all the offense the Brewers needed.  It was McGehee’s 5th long ball of the year and his first since May 20th.  McGehee hopes this will help get himself going again…

The bullpen closed out the game as Latroy Hawkins pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning with a pair of strike-outs while John Axford struck out the side in the 9th to record his 22nd save of the year.

The Brewers got some help in the standings as St. Louis and Pittsburgh both loss.  Milwaukee now sits a game behind the Cardinals for first in the NL Central and a half game ahead of Pittsburgh for second. 

Milwaukee welcomes Cincinnati to Miller Park tonight to open a 4-game series before the All-Star Break.  The Reds are 3-games out of first place in the division and 2-behind the Crew.  Chris Narveson and Homer Bailey open the series tonight for a 7:10 first pitch.
