With a chance to secure their first series sweep of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers fought to stay with the Tigers before the bullpen faltered in a 5-2 loss Wednesday night at Comerica Park.
Tied at two in the eighth, Jonathan Broxton entered the game and promptly retired the first two batters he faced. Then he allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases, which were ultimately cleared on a Nick Castellanos triple that skipped past right fielder Gerardo Parra.
Milwaukee rallied twice to tie the game. Ryan Braun’s solo home run the fourth evened the game at one. Elian Herrera’s RBI double plated Khris Davis to knot the game at two in the seventh.
The Brewers (15-26) still had runners at second and third with one out after Herrera’s hit, but Martin Maldonado’s line drive to short led to Luis Sardinas being doubled off at third.
For Braun, the home run is his tenth of the year, with the last nine coming over the last 21 games. He also reached 790 career RBIs, moving him into a tie for third all-time in Brewers history with Paul Molitor.
Starter Kyle Lohse threw well, allowing just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work. He managed to surrender just one run in the fourth despite loading the bases with no outs.
Milwaukee, which had won two straight prior to last night, continues a ten-game road trip with the first of four in Atlanta (19-20). Matt Garza (2-5) gets the call against the Braves Julio Teheran (3-1). First pitch at 6:10 p.m.
