The Milwaukee Brewers made a huge statement with a convincing 12-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Tuesday night. While the Brewers couldn't gain any ground on the Central Division leading Cubs and remain 5-games out, they did increase their lead on the Cardinals in the Wildcard chase to 4 1/2 games and can make it 5 1/2 with a win in the series finale tonight.
The Brewers have now won 5-straight games overall and 7-straight against the Cardinals. Tonight's game is the final meeting between the two teams this season.
Ben Sheets tossed six shutout innings to win his 12th (12-7) game of the season. He scattered five hits and walked only 2 and held the Cardinals to just 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position. It was a big win for Sheets for a number of reasons, including the fact that he hadn't won in St. Louis since 2004.
The Brewers broke the game open with a 7-run ninth inning. They banged out 16 hits total on the night. The got home runs from Bill Hall and Ryan Braun.
Manny Parra pitches the series finale for the Brewers.
