San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jake Peavy took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, only to see Mark Reynolds’ broken-bat single to right field end his bid with one out in the 8th. The Giants still went on to win 3-1 over the Milwaukee Brewers at AT&T Park, grabbing the first two games in the series.
Mike Fiers scattered seven hits over seven innings and walked two while striking out nine over 110 pitches but suffered the loss, falling to 4-2.
The Brewers have dropped four straight on their trip out west, after winning the first game on the trip in San Diego. Their lead on the St. Louis Cardinals atop the NL Central is down to 1-game and 2-games on the Pittsburgh.
The no-hitter could have ended one inning earlier, if not for a great defensive play by Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. His diving play on a Scooter Gennett shot back up the middle was followed by a slip to second and a turn by second baseman Joe Panik for the inning ending double play.
Peavy got Khris Davis to ground out for the first out in the 8th inning. Then came Reynolds, who with a 1-2 count, blooped a single to short right field to end Peavy’s no-hit bid.
The Brewers scored their only run in the 9th off of closer Santiago Casilla, who gave up a double to right by Jonathan Lucroy and an RBI single to Ryan Braun.
The Brewers and Giants close out their series this afternoon with the Brewers needing a win to avoid the sweep and end their 4-game losing streak.
