Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Rymer Liriano is hospitalized after being hit in the face with a pitch during a 3-1 exhibition win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Phoenix.
It happened in the eighth inning on Sunday, when Dodgers right-hander matt West threw a high-and-tight pitch that struck the 24-year-old Liriano near his left eye. Liriano was carted off the field and taken to a hospital where he’ll undergo further test. He’ll start the season on the disabled list.
Liriano was acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres in January, and he’s out of minor league options, which put pressure on him to compete for an outfield spot with the Brewers.
Jimmy Nelson gave up one run on four hits in six innings against a Dodgers split squad, as Milwaukee improved to 9-8-1 in the Cactus League. They’ll face the Angels today.
