The holiday shopping season means good deals on new electronics. However, consumers are being urged to recycle the products they plan to replace.

Big screen TVs, Blu-Ray players, and computers will likely be on many shopping lists this year. Thad Nation with Wired Wisconsin says those new purchases will likely replace devices already being used at home, leaving the question of what to do with the old ones.

Nation says finding a new use for those products should be the first priority. Moving the device to another part of the home, giving it to someone, or donating it can help extend the use of that item.

If the product is nearing the end of its life though, Nation says many retailers will accept old devices for recycling. Several facilities across the state also allow you to drop them off to be recycled.

State law does require consumers to recycle old electronic devices, rather than throwing them away. Many consumer electronics are banned from Wisconsin landfills.
