The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is joining schools like the UW-Madison and Marquette University in purchasing Internet domain names with the “.xxx” suffix.

UW-Green Bay spokesman Chris Sampson says websites with that ending are primarily pornography sites, and school officials did not want to take a chance at being associated with them.

Sampson is not aware of any website operators planning to bank on the school’s name, but he says it’s better to be cautious.

Some schools have purchased more than a dozen domain names with the “.xxx” ending. Sampson says the move will cost the UW-Green Bay about $500 a year.
