Two cancer-fighting organizations are stepping up to help cancer patients in the flood-ravaged parts of our state.

The American Cancer Society and the Lance Armstrong Foundation are working together to provide housing, transportation and medical assistance to cancer patients affected by June's devastating floods.

"We really felt an immediate and urgent need to address the cancer patients who are feeling the effects of the flooding."

American Cancer Society State Vice President Beth Lunow says the newly-created 'High Ground for Cancer Patients' is a proactive approach to help cancer patients living in any of Wisconsin's 29 counties designated as federal disaster areas.

"Having cancer is hard enough," and having to deal with water damage on top of that is just too much to handle.

Cancer survivors and patients need to focus their time and energy on getting better, not on the obstacles derived from water damage. Assistance of up to $1,000 is available to help ease a patient's additional burden due to severe storms and flooding. It's unknown how many Wisconsin cancer patients might be making use of this initiative.
