MarquetteGoldenEagles2Former BYU shooting ace Matt Carlino knocked down 8 of 14 shots from distance to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 72-70 win over Georgia Tech in the opening round of the Orlando Classic on Thursday night.

His 8 three-pointers were one short of the school record.

“Coach called me out after the NJIT game and he just said, ‘You need to step up,'” said Carlino, who scored one point on 0-for-5 shooting in Monday’s 62-57 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology.  “I had to.  We weren’t going to win, really.”

Marquette trailed 31-29 at halftime.

Carlino finished without any field goals inside the arc (0 for 4) but went 14 for 16 at the free throw line.   Marquette hit 23 of 32 as a team at the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles move into the semifinals tonight, facing No. 20 Michigan State at 8 p.m.  The Spartans advanced by beating Rider 77-45.
