Garcia returning to college, but where?

July 7, 2021 By Bill Scott

Dawson Garcia has decided to pull his name from consideration for the NBA Draft and will return to college basketball.  But just where he ends up, remains to be seen.

The 6’11 Garcia entered the NCAA transfer portal on June 25 and will be eligible to play at a new school immediately as a first-time transfer if he decides to go elsewhere.

Garcia averaged 13 points and 6.6 rebounds a game as a freshman at Marquette last season and is reportedly deciding on moves to Arizona, Illinois and North Carolina, as well as returning to Marquette.

Garcia was not invited to the NBA Combine, which is a strong indicator that pro scouts think Garcia needed more time in college to develop.

Brewers acquire first base help

July 7, 2021 By Bill Scott

With Daniel Vogelbach on the injured list and Keston Hiura continuing to struggle with the bat, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired first baseman Rowdy Tellez from the Toronto Blue Jays for pitchers Trevor Richards and Bowden Francis.

Richards was acquired by the Brewers earlier in the Willy Adames deal, while Francis was recently promoted from Class AA Biloxi to Class AAA Nashville in the Brewers farm system.

Just a day earlier, Hiura struck out four times in the Brewers 4-2, series opening loss to the New York Mets.  He had already been demoted twice to the minors.

The left-handed hitting Tellez is 26 years of age and has played his entire career with the Blue Jays (2018-21), batting .241 with 37 home runs and 99 RBI in 219 games.  He hit .209 with four homers and eight RBI in 50 games over two stints with the Blue Jays this season, and .298 with four homers and 11 RBI in 13 games with Class AAA Buffalo.

The Brewers game Tuesday against the Mets was postponed by weather.  It’ll be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday with 1:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. start times.

Antetokounmpo is doubtful for Game 5

July 1, 2021 By Bill Scott

Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks square off in game five of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Championship series at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on Thursday night, but the Bucks are expected to be without their superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo suffered a hyper-extended left knee in Tuesday’s game four loss to the Hawks in Atlanta, but the good news came on Wednesday when an MRI revealed no structural damage to Giannis’ knee.

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said that as far as Antetokounmpo’s availability going forward, the team will take it day-by-day and see how he’s doing.

The series is tied 2-2 and if it goes to seven games, two of the three remaining games will be played in Milwaukee.

Atlanta played without their star guard Trae Young in Game 4 and his availability for Game 5 is also up in the air.

Young is Questionable for Game 4 Against the Bucks

June 28, 2021 By Bill Scott

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young suffered a bone bruise in his foot and is listed as questionable for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night.  An MRI revealed the injury on Monday.

Young sprained his ankle with 36 seconds to go in the third quarter when he inadvertently stepped on the foot of game official Sean Wright.

Young had 32 points through the first three quarters on Sunday night but managed just three points in the fourth quarter after returning to the game.

Khris Middleton poured in 38 points to lead the Bucks to a 113-102 victory and a 2-1 lead in the series.  That’s back-to-back wins for the Bucks after dropping the series opener in Milwaukee.

Assembly Republicans pass bill to ban trans women from high school and college women’s sports

June 17, 2021 By Raymond Neupert

Republicans in the state Assembly have passed a pair of bills that restrict how trans women can take part in high school and college sports.

The bill’s author, Republican Barb Dietrich, says the bill would create a separate but equal co-ed branch of youth sports that trans women would be allowed to participate in.

“If a biological female is perfectly comfortable competing against a biological male, this legislation provides a way to do so!”

Democrat Lee Snodgrass says the move is a cynical way to attack trans athletes. “If we really truly care about women’s sports issues, we should be working on closing the pay gap in women’s sports. We should be making investments in sports and promoting equal economically opportunities for these girls and women.”

Snodgrass says trans women already have it tough competing. “They suffer from higher rates of bullying, anxiety, depression, all of which – news flash – make it more difficult to train and be competitive.”

Dietrich says that children who are trans need mental help rather than help competing in sports. “Let’s get them the care that they need on the mental health level, rather than allowing them to displace women who have worked so hard to reach this achievement level.”

Governor Evers says he’ll be vetoing the bill if it makes it to his desk.
