Today’s the day Wisconsin goes smoke free, but will compliance with the new law be one hundred percent? “There will always be, no matter how well your law is written, a few folks who don’t want to comply,” says Maureen Busalacchi with Smoke Free Wisconsin. “But by and large, most folks are going to comply right away.”

There are a number of celebrations taking place around the state to note implementation of the new law, but there’s still a little work to be done. “We do need to work with the Native American tribes, although Oneida did have two casinos go smoke free last month,” notes Busalacchi. “They’re smaller venues, but we’re excited about that, and hope they have good results.” While some tavern proprietors who are investing money in smoking accommodations, Busalacchi cautions against such expenditures, noting that a solid majority of state residents don’t smoke. She’s also urging nonsmokers to get out and patronize the state’s newly smoke free establishments.
